Belichick on deflated balls: 'We try to do everything right'
Belichick on deflated balls: 'We try to do everything right'
New England Patriots football head coach Bill Belichick speaks during an NFL football news conference at Gillette Stadium, Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, in Foxborough, Mass., where he defended the way his team preps its game balls. |
FOXBOROUGH, Mass.
(AP) -- Saying his team "followed every rule to the letter," New
England Patriots coach Bill Belichick described in detail how his team
prepares its footballs on game day and defended his players from chatter
that they made it to the Super Bowl by cheating.
"At
no time was there any intent whatsoever to try to compromise the
integrity of the game or to gain an advantage," Belichick said in an
unscheduled availability on Saturday afternoon, eight days before the
Patriots will play the Seattle Seahawks for the NFL championship.
"Quite
the opposite: we feel like we followed the rules of the game to the
letter," he said. "We try to do everything right. We err on the side of
caution. It's been that way now for many years. Anything that's close,
we stay as far away from the line as we can."
Speaking
once again with authority on a topic he previously professed ignorance
of, Belichick said the team conducted an internal study on the process
of getting game balls ready.
Most of the steps
are designed to make them tackier, which has a noticeable effect on how
it feels, he said, but the process could also affect the pressure
inside the ball, which is harder to tell by touch.
"I'm
not a scientist. I'm not an expert in footballs; I'm not an expert in
football measurements," Belichick said. "I'm just telling you what I
know."
The Patriots reached the Super Bowl for
the sixth time in Belichick's tenure when they beat the Colts 45-7 in
the AFC championship game on Sunday. But later that night, Indianapolis
TV station WTHR reported that some of the game balls provided by New
England for the use of its offense weren't sufficiently inflated.
The
NFL said its initial investigation confirmed that some of the footballs
used in the first half of the conference title game were underinflated.
On Thursday, Belichick deferred questions on the game balls to Brady;
the quarterback also denied any impropriety.
But
in the slow news off-days before Super Bowl week, the allegations
received disproportionate attention - and Twitter hashtags such as
"Deflategate" and "Ballghazi" - along with comparisons to the
videotaping scandal of 2007, when the Patriots were hit with
unprecedented penalties after Belichick was caught recording opposing
coaches sending in signals from the sidelines.
Belichick denied that there is a pattern of rule-breaking, or even of pushing the rules to their limit.
"It
was wrong. We were disciplined for it. That's it. We never did it
again. We're never going to do it again," Belichick said of the scandal
that came to be known as "Spygate." "And anything else that's close,
we're not going to do either."
A football
lifer who only seems happy on the sidelines, if at all, Belichick is
known for an absolute attention to detail that prepares his team for
every imaginable situation.
But instead of
getting ready for the Super Bowl, he said he has spent far too much time
the past week studying the science and learning about "bladders, air
gauges, stitching, pressure, game day football preparation, rubdowns and
so forth."
"I'm embarrassed to talk about the
amount of time that I've put into this relative to the other important
challenge in front of us," he said. "It sounds simple, and I'm not
trying to say that we're trying to land a guy on the moon, but there are
a lot of things here that are a little hard to get a handle on."
But
Belichick seemed most emotional when he came to the defense of his
team. Among the questions he and his players have been asked this week
is whether they cheated to get to the Super Bowl.
Belichick
praised his players, who went 12-4 in the regular season, won an 11th
division title in 12 years, made a fourth straight trip - and ninth
overall - to the conference championship game, and have a chance for a
fourth NFL title in his tenure.
"They're a
physically and mentally tough team that works hard, that trains hard,
that prepares hard and have met every challenge that I put in front of
them," he said.
"This team was the best team
in the AFC in the regular season. ... The best team in the postseason,
that's what this team is. I know that because I've been with them every
day. And I'm proud of this team."

Seahawks Top Packers 28-22 To Punch Their Ticket To Super Bowl
Seahawks Top Packers 28-22 To Punch Their Ticket To Super Bowl

SEATTLE, WA – JANUARY 18: Luke Willson #82 of the Seattle
Seahawks celebrates after scoring on a two point conversion during
the fourth quarter of the 2015 NFC Championship game against the
Green Bay Packers at CenturyLink Field on January 18, 2015 in
Seattle, Washington.
SEATTLE (AP) — The loudest stadium in America was silent. A return trip to the Super Bowl was slipping away.
Time for the Seattle Seahawks to show why they are champions.
“You have the belief these guys have in one another, there is nothing you can’t do,” coach Pete Carroll said after an implausible comeback for a 28-22 victory over Green Bay in the NFC championship game Sunday.
Plagued by turnovers and outplayed much of the day, the Seahawks staged a stunning rally built on resilience. Russell Wilson, who struggled until the final minutes, hit Jermaine Kearse for a 35-yard touchdown 3:19 into the extra period to win it.
The Seahawks became the first defending champion to make the Super Bowl in 10 years, and will play the AFC champion New England Patriots, who routed Indianapolis 45-7. How Seattle got there was stunning.

the 2015 AFC Championship Game at Gillette Stadium on January
18, 2015 in Foxboro, Massachusetts.
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tom Brady threw for three touchdowns and LeGarrette Blount ran in three more on Sunday to lead the New England Patriots into the Super Bowl with a 45-7 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.
The Patriots won their eighth AFC championship — their sixth under Brady and coach Bill Belichick. They will play the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl in Glendale, Arizona, on Feb. 1.
New England (14-4) opened a 14-point lead in the first half and then broke it open in a driving rain with three third-quarter touchdowns and another to start the fourth. That made it the second-most lopsided game in AFC championship history.

Nina Milano, Fashion and Beauty Model, uses her image to support
social issues in America. Making a statement to city council,
the mayor, and even the public library in Yeadon Borough, Delaware County,
recreation centers and sports fields for kids among her concerns.
At a community billboard led by Fashion and Beauty Model Nina Milano, Phillly Suburban residents are assisted to expressed concerns over a variety of issues, including the parks and recreation department. The Puerto Rican-American Model supports groups gathering in the Philadelphia Suburb auditoriums to ask a panel of city officials about issues including blighted houses, dirt bike laws, attracting new real estate and retail businesses to their neighborhoods and the potential closure of city recreation centers.
Faced with competition from better-equipped YMCA's and a shrinking city budget, Yeadon Borough's recreation centers are on track to shut down completely or offer children deteriorating facilities and broken-down equipment. To fix the problem, Milano hopes that the department that oversees recreation will pay more attention to the recreation shortage for kids. Nina Milano is all for an assembled task force of models, city leaders, private citizens and business executives to figure out how the Department of Recreation and Parks can generate money.

Teddy Pendergrass and Joan Williams, on their wedding day in 2008.
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — It’s been five years since R&B crooner Teddy Pendergrass died in a suburban Philadelphia hospital, and for the first time since his death, his widow is speaking out about the family court battle, the singer’s legacy, and what’s next.
“Teddy and I were soul mates and good partners,” Joan Pendergrass told KYW Newsradio this morning. She says she fell in love with Theodore Pendergrass in 2006, but when he died four years later she found herself embroiled in a nasty court battle over his estate.
“One of the allegations was that I’m a gold digger, and it’s untrue,” she says calmly.

ESPN sportscaster Stuart Scott dies at age 49
ESPN sportscaster Stuart Scott dies at age 49
Stuart Scott, ESPN
BRISTOL, Conn. -
Stuart Scott, the longtime "SportsCenter" anchor and ESPN personality known for his enthusiasm and ubiquity, died Sunday. He was 49.
Scott had fought cancer since a diagnosis in late 2007, the network said, but remained dedicated to his craft even as he underwent chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.
ESPN President John Skipper said in a statement that Scott was "a true friend and a uniquely inspirational figure" and that his "energetic and unwavering devotion to his family and to his work while fighting the battle of his life left us in awe, and he leaves a void that can never be replaced."
Scott accepted the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPYs in July. During his speech, he told his teenage daughters: "Taelor and Sydni, I love you guys more than I will ever be able to express. You two are my heartbeat. I am standing on this stage here tonight because of you."
On Sunday morning, NFL Network broadcaster Rich Eisen's voice broke as he reported the death of his good friend, with whom he worked on "SportsCenter" broadcasts.
"I love this man," Eisen said.
ESPN anchor Hannah Storm called him "our colleague, our friend and our inspiration" as she reported the news. On the network's NFL pregame show, Chris Berman said, "Stuart made ESPN what it is, he made us better people."
Born in Chicago, Scott attended high school in North Carolina. After graduating from the University of North Carolina in 1987, Scott worked at three TV stations in the southern U.S. before joining ESPN for the 1993 launch of its ESPN2 network, hosting short sports update segments.
He often anchored the 11 p.m. "SportsCenter," where he would punctuate emphatic highlights with
"Boo-ya!" or note a slick move as being "as cool as the other side of the pillow."
Scott went on to cover countless major events for the network, including the Super Bowl, NBA finals, World Series and NCAA Tournament. He also interviewed President Barack Obama, joining him for a televised game of one-on-one. In 2001, Scott returned to Chapel Hill as the university's commencement speaker.
Scott was first diagnosed with cancer in November 2007 after he had to leave the "Monday Night Football" game between Miami and Pittsburgh to have his appendix removed. Doctors discovered a tumor during surgery. He underwent chemotherapy again in 2011.
Scott made a point of continuing to live his life — at work and outside of it.
"Who engages in mixed martial arts training in the midst of chemotherapy treatments?" Skipper said in ESPN's statement. "Who leaves a hospital procedure to return to the set?"
Scott is survived by his parents, O. Ray and Jacqueline Scott; siblings Stephen Scott, Synthia Kearney and Susan Scott; his daughters Taelor, 19, and Sydni, 15; and girlfriend Kristin Spodobalski.
As he accepted the award named for former N.C. State coach Jim Valvano, who died of cancer in 1993, Scott noted: "When you die, that does not mean that you lose to cancer.
"You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live," Scott said. "So live. Live. Fight like hell."
