PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philly native Da’Vine Joy Randolph won Best Supporting Actress at all the major film awards last season for her role in “The Holdovers.” Now, she’s returning to her hometown for a benefit performance just in time for the holiday and couldn’t be more excited.
“You know, I think as your career continues to grow and it takes you to all these beautiful places … there is nothing like coming home and to work at home — the place that was the birthplace of my imagination and my curiosity and me … bumbling around the streets of Philadelphia and figuring out what I wanted to do, what I wanted to be, how I wanted to create, and this beautiful city was there to support me,” Randolph said.
Randolph will take the stage at Suzanne Roberts Theatre on South Broad Street on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m., to perform in a reading of Terrence McNally’s “Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune.”

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Wednesday is one of the busiest travel days of the year, as people are hitting the roads, rails and the skies to get to their Thanksgiving destinations.

Lines were long early in the morning to get through the Terminals D/E checkpoint at Philadelphia International Airport. The wait time displayed on the screens was 33 to 38 minutes, though the crowd seemed to move quicker than that.
TSA was fully staffed and prepared, according to Gerardo Spero, the federal security director of TSA in Philadelphia and the state of Delaware.
“We offered our officers every opportunity to come in and work extra hours. We have non-screeners that come out and do augmentation, interact with the passengers, help do the things that free up the officers to do their work,” he said.
Airport officials projected 94,000 passengers would fly in and out of Philly International on Wednesday. It is expected to be the second busiest day during the Thanksgiving travel period. Sunday, when many people fly home, is projected to be the busiest.

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley is going to make it hard on voters to pick just the best quarterback available for MVP this season.
Barkley added to his remarkable season with another huge game, and this one was in prime time. Barkley was unstoppable as he ran over, around and past the Los Angeles Rams. Barkley rushed for 255 yards, passed 1,500 yards from scrimmage on the season, and the Eagles cruised to a 37-20 win. Barkley's rushing total was the ninth highest in a game in NFL history and the most in Eagles history.
The victory puts Philadelphia's record at 9-2 for the season. With the Washington Commanders’ loss on Sunday, the Eagles lead the division by three games with six to play.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (KABC) -- From tiny gourds to much larger ones, the Satwiwa NativeAmerican Indian Culture Center teaches art classes to visitors from all over Southern California.
"Part of our history... all indigenous people all over the planet... is to leave things better than we found them," said Nadiya Littlewarrior.
Littlewarrior teaches the workshop and explains how gourds are an integral part of Native American history. They are often used for musical instruments, storage, jewelry and ceremony pieces. Some tribes used them in the past as small refrigerators in freezing cold rivers.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It’s something that many of us take for granted: grabbing a coat from the closet when it’s cold, or buying a new one when the old coat doesn’t fit. But for the almost 23% of Philadelphians living below the poverty line, it’s not that simple.
Cradles to Crayons is also collecting warm clothing, like sweatshirts and long-sleeve shirts.
“The need is overwhelming. Unfortunately, as we know, inflation’s been hitting everybody’s pockets very hard in the past 18 months,” said Michal Smith, executive director of the nonprofit Cradles to Crayons.
New data shows Philadelphia’s homeless population increased by nearly 38% last year. Families are also still recovering from the back-to-school season, with 31% of adults carrying debt from purchasing school supplies.

WESTLAKE VILLAGE -- NFL Linebacker, Cassius Marsh Sr., recently celebrated the opening of his trading cards shop, Cash Cards Unlimited. The shop carries cards for popular games such as Magic: The Gathering, Pokmon, and Yu-Gi-Oh! as well as football and basketball cards.
Marsh's interest in strategy card games started when he began collecting Pokmon cards at around 7-years-old. Marsh remembers explaining to his mom, I had to get my Wartortle to evolve into a Blastoise.
These days, the former UCLA Bruin is proud of his card collections, but that wasnt always the case. Store Manager and Marsh's friend of 16 years, Nick Nugwynne, didnt even know Marsh played Magic: The Gathering until after college.
He was kind of a closet nerd about it, but once he came out and told us, it was really cool to see how knowledgeable he is on the product and the game and how complicated the game really is to play, said Nugwynne.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Parker administration on Tuesday opened the first of a series of City Council hearings on the 76ers’ Center City arena proposal by presenting a litany of expected benefits. Council members responded by sharing a litany of concerns.
Normally, a new construction project would go through the Committee on Commerce and Economic Development, but for this particular set of legislation, City Council will sit as the committee of the whole, with all 17 members scrutinizing the proposal.
Mayor Cherelle Parker has called her deal with the 76ers “the best sports facility agreement in [the city’s] history,” but two Council members have already announced their opposition to the project, and three others voted no on two procedural resolutions related to the arena.

NEW YORK (AP) — Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid was suspended by the NBA on Tuesday for three games without pay for shoving a member of the media.
Embiid’s suspension will begin with the next NBA regular-season game for which he is eligible and able to play. He has yet to play this season with that the 76ers call left knee management.
Embiid shouted at and eventually shoved a Philadelphia newspaper columnist in a locker room altercation Saturday night.
“Mutual respect is paramount to the relationship between players and media in the NBA,” NBA executive Joe Dumars said in a statement announcing the suspension. “While we understand Joel was offended by the personal nature of the original version of the reporter’s column, interactions must remain professional on both sides and can never turn physical.”
Embiid took issue with Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Marcus Hayes, who mentioned the All-Star center’s late brother and his son — both named Arthur — in columns questioning Embiid’s professionalism and effort not being in shape after playing in the Paris Olympics.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A judge has dismissed the case against former Philadelphia police officer Ryan Pownall, who was charged with the murder of David Jones, a Black man, in 2017.
Following testimony from the former prosecutor who handled the original investigating grand jury, Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas judge Barbara McDermott said Tuesday that District Attorney Larry Krasner's office didn’t properly instruct jurors on the charges of murder or manslaughter, among other legal terms.
As of now, Pownall faces no charges.
In 2017, Pownall fatally shot Jones twice in the back during a traffic stop in North Philadelphia.
Police said Pownall was transporting a victim to the special victims unit when he saw Jones riding a dirtbike on a city street. Jones’ bike had stalled and he pulled into the parking lot of a night club. Pownall also pulled into the lot, and when he frisked Jones, he said he felt a gun.
Police officials have said that Pownall tried to shoot Jones during the struggle, but that his gun jammed. Jones threw his gun down and fled, and Pownall fired at him, shooting him in the back and killing him.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump was elected the 47th president of the United States on Wednesday, an extraordinary comeback for a former president who refused to accept defeat four years ago, sparked a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, was convicted of felony charges and survived two assassination attempts.
With a win in Wisconsin, Trump cleared the 270 electoral votes needed to clinch the presidency.
The victory validates his bare-knuckle approach to politics. He attacked his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, in deeply personal – often misogynistic and racist – terms as he pushed an apocalyptic picture of a country overrun by violent migrants. The coarse rhetoric, paired with an image of hypermasculinity, resonated with angry voters – particularly men – in a deeply polarized nation.
As president, he’s vowed to pursue an agenda centered on dramatically reshaping the federal government and pursuing retribution against his perceived enemies. Speaking to his supporters Wednesday morning, Trump claimed he had won “an unprecedented and powerful mandate.”
The results cap a historically tumultuous and competitive election season that included two assassination attempts targeting Trump and a shift to a new Democratic nominee just a month before the party’s convention. Trump will inherit a range of challenges when he assumes office on Jan. 20, including heightened political polarization and global crises that are testing America’s influence abroad.
