PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Friday was a big night at Citizens Bank Park, not just because the Phillies took on division rivals the Marlins. One Phillies player had a big surprise for local baseball players who make memories of their own every Sunday night.

Phillies relief pitcher Matt Strahm found out about Delaware County's Newtown Edgmont Angels through his agent, who’s been involved with the senior challenger baseball team for years.

So when Strahm signed with the Phillies in 2023, it was only a matter of time before he got to know the Angels.

“They invited us out to a game Sunday night. We watched them and fell in love with them,” Strahm said.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — While eyes will be on Philadelphia on July 4, 2026, to ring in the nation’s 250th, celebrations will be held statewide — not just to mark the birth of American democracy, but also Pennsylvania’s role in its history.

“Pennsylvanians didn't just witness history. We drove it. We shaped this nation. We changed the world. And we're not done yet,” said America250 Pennsylvania Executive Director Cassandra Coleman.

On the events lineup is a Liberty Tree planting in all 67 counties with trees propagated and descended from the original Liberty Tree; the Keystone Classroom Initiative, a story telling and visitation program that brings the state’s history to life; Bells Across PA, with fiberglass bells in every county to reflect unique aspects of the community; and special Veteran’s Day events.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Will Smith is a Philadelphia legend, a rapper, actor and film producer who has won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and four Grammys. On Wednesday, he added another accomplishment to his list, one that made a permanent mark on his hometown.

“Now therefore be it resolved that the council of the city of Philadelphia hereby proposes the renaming of the 2000 block of 59th Street to ‘Will Smith Way,’” read Council President Kenyatta Johnson.

Hundreds gathered to watch as the bridge from Wynnefield to Overbrook High School was renamed in honor of the West Philly native, who also received a key to the city.

“I walked across this bridge for my whole high school career in snow and rain,” Smith recalled. “I grew up at 59th and Woodcrest in Wynnefield. I was walking over but I was running back.”

The star took the opportunity to reflect on Will Smith Way not only as a sign, but as a metaphor for life.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Amid rising costs and policy shifts in Washington, Philabundance hosted a hunger action symposium Friday at Rutgers University-Camden to address food insecurity.

Uncertainty was an underlying theme of the symposium as policy makers, researchers, advocates and lawmakers gathered to discuss solutions to what is expected to become a growing problem. Loree Jones Brown, CEO of Philabundance, said two years ago, about half a million people in the area the organization serves were considered food insecure. A year later, that number rose to 600,000.

"That's in the whole region if you look in the city of Philadelphia alone, 1 in 3 kids are food insecure,” said Brown. “So the numbers are actually going in the wrong direction and with what we think is going to come in terms of changes to the economy and federal policy, we're worried that that's going to go up even higher."

Salaries have not kept up with inflation, and with people losing jobs and cuts to government programs, she said they're already seeing a higher demand. Barbee Izquierdo is an advocate with Feeding America. She shared her story and her own experience of being food insecure.
