Gloria Trevi to Receive BMI President's Award

  

Gloria Trevi rose to prominence in the 1990s as a sizzling performer who was often referred to as the “Mexican Madonna.” But even in her earliest days, Trevi described herself as a songwriter first and foremost.

And on March 2, she will be honored as such, when she receives BMI’s President’s Award at the 23rd annual BMI Latin Awards.

Slated to take place at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, the ceremony will also salute the songwriters and publishers of 2015’s most-performed Latin songs on U.S. radio and TV.

For Trevi, it’s a high honor after a spectacular comeback that most recently saw her release El Amor, an album of Latin standards in which she also includes some of her own compositions.

“I’ve always been like an open book and very coherent in my [musical] evolution,” Trevi told Billboard in 2011. “In the beginning I was the crazy chick, the one with the long hair who stuck her tongue out at a society of hypocrites.

Then they broke my heart, and while I was still that girl who could criticize, I was also in pain, like the protester who’s tortured in prison.

It was all in the moment I was going through.” As for El Amor, “It’s very easy and very complicated,” she told Billboard last year. “Everything I did in my life -- good or bad, mistakes or success -- everything I made was for love.”

El Amor, Trevi’s 13th album, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart. It caps a career that has included hits like “Dr. Psiquiatra,” “Pelo Suelto” and “Con el recuento de los daños.”
