Westside
Weekly 30th Anniversary: The final edition of the Westside
Weekly Newspaper?
February
16, 1989. The eight-page Westside Weekly, publishing about real news and the
neighbors from the West Philadelphia area, made its debut with the headline
"Hello Neighbors" and a full slate of ads from local stores, beauty
parlors, naileries, a beer distributor and other merchants. It was created by
founder, editor and publisher Tyree Johnson.
The
final edition of the Westside Weekly Newspaper sat atop a piece of the printer presses
in the month of July, 2018, the night before it hit its West Philadelphia
neighborhood. It’s the 30th anniversary of Westside Weekly. But will it really be the
final edition?
Few
newspapers ran stories written by knowledgeable beat reporters, journalists who
spent years developing expertise in the courts, or local government, police and
fire districts, business, homes, schools, recreation centers and playgrounds like
the Westside Weekly has done it.
There
was so much accuracy, truth and depth to the news reported by the Westside
Weekly that its Journalistic reputation reached citywide and even countywide
too.
Often
times, there were front page news stories or back page headlines about the
risk of corruption, of mismanagement, or lower levels of voter turnout. All of
this effected West Philly neighbor readers who were away on vacation or even in
prison. They got ahold of the paper somehow regardless if they were subscribers
or not.
The
people of West Philadelphia need this type of news.
Tyree
Johnson at the helm ensured West Philadelphians and many times its outskirt
neighbors that the primary job of his news organization was giving a community
an understanding of itself as well as an identity, by helping the community it
serves to thrive.
Now
we know there’s a problem. We know there’s a need. The Westside Weekly may
never publish another news story again. The Westside Weekly is in need of another editor and publisher to help
continue the paper’s legacy of friendly neighborhood reporting. And to do that
it takes money.
Being
local and from afar, readers risk not having an informed news source to look to
when there comes a time that other newspapers and or magazines just won’t seem
to be interested in a particular style of story.
Who
else better to further the cause for Westside Weekly honest news reporting
serving Philadelphians than Van Stone? Does anyone have entertainment news,
personal news, money matter news, cultural news? You have given me a call
before about it. Why stop now?
I
have the experience; my reputation for delivering proceeds me, I’m known to get
the facts correct, I know the best freelance writers and reporters, I can reach
the top newsmakers serving in local government, local law enforcement, schools
and play areas, it has been said that I will battle, especially opinion
writers, and I write just about anything that’s news worthy- just about
anything and anyone is my style of story to cover.
It
has been said, just one of those opinion things here and there, that a
newspaper company has to be passionate about something, but it can’t be
everything. My opinion is a lot different about that. To me, being passionate
about everything gets the job done, gets the right news about our community out
and all but ignores no one.
I’m
asking for your donations to help keep the Westside Weekly from the list of
newspapers that have died. If anyone who follows Van Stone is reading this
request please send money for the hard copy newspaper to continue with my help
to take its helm. Our GoFundMe thing is ready and waiting. We will be able to
keep putting out the best news about YOUR town- I cover news that’s both local
and national too- just in case you didn’t know that about me.
