2015 NCAA Tournament: Tom Izzo savors seventh Final Four appearance

2015 NCAA Tournament: Tom Izzo savors seventh Final Four appearance

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo holds up the net after his team defeated
Louisville, 76-70, in overtime Sunday to win the East Region and advance
to Izzo’s seventh Final Four.

When a man has seven Final Four berths, the assortment can end up motley. Tom Izzo of Michigan State has been to three as a No. 1 seed, one as a No. 2 seed that upended a No. 1 seed, two as a No. 5 seed and now one as a No. 7 seed. He has one as a national favorite (2000), one as a local favorite (2009, Detroit) and one as a decided non-favorite (2015) among No. 1 seeds Kentucky, Wisconsin and Duke.

He even has one (2015) he didn’t expect to get even as it follows upon a year when he thought he could get one but didn’t — indeed, last season’s Elite Eight exit came when a national championship might have occurred were it not for Connecticut, a refrain several teams came to parrot. Perhaps most tellingly, Izzo has one from 1999 and one from 2015.

In a span that wide, a coach learns some truths only elite coaches know, and Izzo echoes one Florida Coach Billy Donovan once stated: Over time, the meaning of winning alters somewhat. A coach might want it a notch less for himself and a notch more for those around him.

“That is very, very, very true,” Izzo said on a gloomy, happy Tuesday in East Lansing, whereupon he went on to mention both his childhood dreams in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, which long since grew realized at a Final Four in 1999 and a national championship in 2000. Fifteen years on, he felt the rare truth just after the East Regional final in Syracuse.“So, when you sit there and then you walk around the court on Sunday and you just kind of look up and there seem to be so many people from Michigan State, and it’s just, all I could think about is, ‘Think how many people are happy,’ ” he said. “You know, so I would agree, because until you go to that first one, you just don’t realize how big it is. And once you experience it, anybody you care about — anybody you care about — you want them to be able to experience the same thing.”

As a No. 1 seed in 1999, Michigan State overcame both an early 17-4 deficit and a seasoned No. 2 seed Kentucky for a 73-66 win in the Midwest Region final. From there, it went to the Final Four in St. Petersburg, Fla., where it played a 36-1 Duke team that had reigned above that entire season. Even given a Michigan State team that had gone 33-4 and 29-1 since early December, Izzo’s voice did ring like a debutant.

“Well, I’m about as excited to be here as I think a guy could ever be,” he said after arrival. “Everybody told me how good it is and how great it gets. But words can’t describe the excitement.” Michigan State played a resolutely forgettable semifinal against Duke, fell by a commendable 68-62 and returned home as a budding champion while Duke stayed on to take an unexpected upending from Connecticut.

Six Final Fours later, Izzo has a berth quirky enough that Michigan State is both the program with the most Final Fours this century and the afterthought of this bunch. It will arrive as neither expected nor all that unexpected. It’s a No. 7 seed that, Izzo claims, incurred no disrespect. It has four more losses (11) than the other three teams combined (seven). Senior Branden Dawson said reaching this Final Four became “the first time I’ve seen Travis [Trice] cry since I’ve known him,” and the senior guard and leader Trice said, “I know this is going to sound crazy, but looking back, I’m kind of happy that we did lose last year because it makes us feel so much better to be on the other side.”

Asked about being the underdog, the junior guard from Lansing, Denzel Valentine said, “You can kind of say yes and kind of say no.”

It’s a team with a defense Izzo found something of a puzzle, such that the Big Ten defensive statistics would come out, the Michigan State statistics would be good, and Izzo would say to his assistants, “How?” It operated differently from his traditional teams with lockdown guys, so that he wound up saying, “You’d watch us, and we were ‘pretty solid,’ would be our best word. We didn’t turn people over a lot. We didn’t do a lot of things like that. But we were pretty solid. So we’ve evolved into a different kind of defense. We’re not a smashmouth defensive team. We’re not a team that gets after you as hard, but we are pretty solid, pretty steady, and I think all of a sudden Trice has gotten better defensively. You know, Valentine improved a ton from last year to this year. He doesn’t get enough credit, and I was putting him on the best player.”

It’s a team Izzo says he “downplayed” a bit because he just couldn’t be sure, even as he plays up his own 1-8 record against Duke and Coach Mike Krzyzewski and says he needs to work on that. Yet these Spartans have gone 8-1 since March 1, so they’re the seventh Final Four team of his sterling collection, so he can revel in it for them. He also can tell them, as he did, “We’re headed to one place, and if we could make it to Monday night, we’ll head to the ultimate place.” He long since knows about that.

University of Oklahoma unveils racist chant probe findings

University of Oklahoma unveils racist chant probe findings

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- Members of a University of Oklahoma fraternity apparently learned a racist chant that recently got their chapter disbanded during a national leadership cruise four years ago that was sponsored by the fraternity's national administration, the university's president said Friday.

President David Boren said the school interviewed more than 160 people during its investigation into members of its now-defunct Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter who were captured on video taking part in the chant, which included references to lynching, a racial slur and the promise that the fraternity would never accept a black member.

"That chant was learned and brought back to the local chapter," Boren said at a news conference in which he disclosed the school investigation's findings. "Over time, the chant was formalized by the local chapter and was taught to pledges as part of the formal and informal pledgeship process."

A statement released Friday by the Evanston, Illinois-based national Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity said its own investigation is ongoing but confirmed the chant likely was shared during its annual six-day retreat. SAE's Executive Director Blaine Ayers said in the statement he believes some members shared the chant during an informal "social gathering" outside of the normal slate of classes, seminars and other educational functions.

"But our investigation to date shows no evidence the song was widely shared across the broader organization," Ayers said.

Boren said about 25 members of the school's SAE chapter will face punishment ranging from two expulsions the school announced previously to mandatory community service and cultural sensitivity training. The video, which surfaced earlier this month, showed fraternity members yelling the chant on a chartered bus while headed to a formal event at an Oklahoma City country club with their dates, Boren said.

Boren said the investigation found alcohol was "readily available" at the fraternity house before the start of the event, and that about a dozen high school students whom he described as "potential recruits" were also on the bus.

Beginning in the fall, Boren said all current and future OU students will be required to take diversity training.

After the video surfaced, Boren immediately severed ties with the local chapter, shuttered the fraternity house and expelled two members who led the chant.

One of those students, Levi Pettit, publicly apologized at a news conference Wednesday in which he was flanked by black community leaders. Pettit, who is from the Dallas enclave of Highland Park, answered a few questions from reporters but declined to say who taught him the chant.

"The truth is what was said in that chant is disgusting ... and after meeting with these people I've learned these words should never be repeated," Pettit said.

A second student from the Dallas area, Parker Rice, also issued a statement apologizing for his role in the chant.

Isaac Hill, the president of the university's Black Student Association, met earlier Friday with Boren and seven student leaders from the defunct OU chapter, along with some student athletes and members of historically black fraternities. Hill, a junior from Midwest City, said each of the fraternity members apologized personally for their role in the chant.

"I believe the students were very sincere in their apologies, and we are all good with that," Hill said.

Also on Friday, Boren sent a letter to Ayers asking the national fraternity director what steps he was taking to investigate the origin of the chant. In the letter, Boren wrote that while there is no indication the chant was part of the formal teaching of the national organization, "it does appear that the chant was widely known and informally shared amongst members on the leadership cruise."

SAE's national leadership disbanded the OU chapter in the wake of the incident and announced it was taking steps to become more inclusive, including requiring all of its members, nationwide, to go through diversity training and by setting up a confidential hotline for people to report inappropriate behavior.

SAE began collecting racial and ethnic data in 2013. Approximately 3 percent of SAE's reporting members identified as African-American and 20 percent identified as non-white, according to Ayers.

Down to 16 teams, NCAA Tournament still has a lot to watch

Down to 16 teams, NCAA Tournament still has a lot to watch

AP Photo
Kentucky head coach John Calipari shouts instructions to his team during the second half of an NCAA tournament college basketball game in Louisville, Ky., Saturday, March 21, 2015. Kentucky won 64-51.

It's the Sweet 16 - the second week of the NCAA Tournament - and that means bragging rights for college basketball programs.

Check the cover of media guides or banners adorning arenas. They always start with Sweet 16 appearances. No bragging about the first weekend. Playing this week means you had two good wins and you are just two wins from the Final Four.

The story of the tournament has been Kentucky's pursuit of a perfect season. Everyone's playing in that shadow. The Wildcats improved to 36-0 - the best start to a season for any team - and they're trying for 40-0. That would be the first undefeated season by a national champion since Indiana in 1976.

The East Region changed dramatically entering the Sweet 16 with top seeds Villanova and Virginia ousted. It's only the eighth time that the top two teams from one region failed to advance to the second week. The last time that happened was in 2004.

The Atlantic Coast Conference and Pac-12 entered the round of 32 as the only leagues with three or more teams not to lose a game. Virginia's loss to Michigan State was the ACC's first after a 9-0 start, and Oregon faced Wisconsin with a chance to make the Pac-12 8-0.

Here are some storylines to watch as the Sweet 16 approaches:
---
UCLA'S RUN: The Bruins were the at-large team complained about the most on Selection Sunday. Wins over SMU and UAB have the 11th-seeded Bruins in the Sweet 16 for the second straight year, the first time they have done that since reaching the Final Four in three straight seasons between 2006 and 2008.
"The selection committee thought we were good enough to play in this tournament, and I think we proved it," forward Tony Parker said.
They will face the winner of the Gonzaga-Iowa game in the Sweet 16.
"There's no better time to do that than March," UCLA coach Steve Alford said.
---
OLD TEAMS: Arizona coach Sean Miller will face his former school, Xavier, in the Sweet 16. Miller has taken the second-seeded Wildcats to the regional semifinals for the third straight year.
Now, he will face the sixth-seeded Musketeers, whom he coached from 2004-2009. Xavier reached the Elite Eight in 2008 under Miller and the Musketeers were in the Sweet 16 the next year.
Chris Mack succeeded Miller at Xavier when he left for Arizona.
"As far as playing Sean, it's really tough," Mack said. "I recruited all these guys that play for me. But Sean gave me a heck of an opportunity to come back to my alma mater. He put a lot of responsibility and trust in me. He ultimately really pushed for me to become the head coach, and for that I'm eternally grateful. It's hard to play against one of your best friends in the business. But it really won't matter to our guys, nor will it matter to Arizona, because they don't know me from a bucket of paint."
---
SPARTY'S PARTY: Michigan State under Tom Izzo has become as familiar in the Sweet 16 as the guys in a school band wearing enough face paint to cover a garage.
The Spartans have reached the regional semifinals for the seventh time in the last eight years. They will face the Oklahoma-Dayton winner in Syracuse, New York.
Izzo has a 13-1 record in games in the round of 32. He was surprised a bit that this team won its second game to move on.
"We've been a team all year that has banged around, probably lost more games than we should have just because of the free throw situation or dumb coaching with 2, 3 seconds left to go in the game and people hitting 3s and tying it," Izzo said. "But I think we've had to earn every single thing we've gotten because every game's been like that. So I think they felt comfortable in a game because that's the way not their whole tournament has gone or the Big Ten Tournament, their whole season has gone that way. I'm really proud of this team. I don't use that word lightly when I speak and I am."

IRISH ALIVE: For the first time in 12 years Notre Dame is in the Sweet 16 and the Fighting Irish moved on with an overtime win over Butler. Steve Vasturia had 20 points for the third-seeded Irish, who face the winner of the Kansas-Wichita State game in the Midwest Regional in Cleveland.
"It's a great feeling. We're playing really well right now," Vasturia said. "We made big plays down the stretch, and we've been doing that all year, getting big defensive stops, hitting shots. So it's a great feeling. We're playing with a lot of confidence right now so we want to keep it rolling."

KENTUCKY'S CHASE: The top-ranked Wildcats showed in the round of 32 why they are the even-money favorite to win the whole thing.
In their win over Cincinnati, the Wildcats shot just 37 percent and were outrebounded 45-38. There really wasn't a point in the game when Kentucky felt threatened about its winning streak and the 64-51 win was the Wildcats' 29th of 36 by at least 10 points.
"I always like it when my team shoots 37, 36, 35 percent and wins in double digits," Kentucky coach John Calipari said. "It shows them they don't have to make shots to win. You can miss them all. No, you can't miss them all. You can miss most of them, and you can still win games if you defend, you rebound and you play that way, make your free throws, and they did."
