Eagles fire coach Chip Kelly with 1 game left in 3rd season
Eagles fire coach Chip Kelly with 1 game left in 3rd season
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly catches a pass
at the
NFL football team's practice facility, Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2015,
in
Philadelphia.
Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie announced Tuesday he released
head coach Chip Kelly, who also oversaw personnel decisions.
Kelly was in his third year with the Eagles, and after he went 10-6
his first two seasons, the team struggled this year. Philadelphia is 6-9
and Saturday's loss to the Redskins eliminated the team from postseason
contention.
"We appreciate all the contributions that Chip Kelly made and wish him every success going forward," Lurie said
in his statement.
The Eagles also released vice president of player personnel Ed
Marynowitz. Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will serve as the interim
head coach for Sunday's season finale against the Giants.
Kelly led the Eagles to an NFC East Division title during his first
season as an NFL coach in 2013, but the former Oregon sideline general
made headlines the following offseason when he played a part in the
releasing of star wide receiver DeSean Jackson.
The team limped down the stretch to another 10-6 season in 2014 but
missed the playoffs. After that, Lurie gave Kelly more control over
personnel, but the coach's moves — including a trade of star running
back LeSean McCoy — only resulted in a drop-off of talent.
Lurie, who will speak with the media Wednesday at noon, also
released a letter on
the Eagles website explaining his decision to release Kelly. The letter
stated Lurie, Don Smolenski and Howie Roseman would head the search for
a new coach.
